Explore MEDNAX’s 2020 neonatal-perinatal medical education lineup

Earlier this year, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) released an updated Obstetric Care Consensus on Levels of Maternal Care. The new guidance is intended to help hospitals provide risk-appropriate maternal care and tackle the high incidence of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States.

Presented by Torri Metz, MD, new ACOG and SMFM guidelines — and how they will impact practices — will take center stage at the Steamboat Perinatal Conference (January 16-18, 2020) in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Steamboat Perinatal Conference is just one of many live continuing medical and nursing education events hosted by the MEDNAX Center for Research, Education, Quality and Safety (CREQS) to benefit obstetric, maternal-fetal and neonatal clinicians.

Now in its 35th year, Steamboat Perinatal Conference encourages a dialogue between participants and faculty. The number of participants is limited to maintain a unique learning environment, and morning and evening sessions are structured to give participants an opportunity to take advantage of the venue.

The MEDNAX CREQS offerings are diverse – clinicians can fulfill continuing education requirements while also taking personal preferences, like conference setting and recreation opportunities, into consideration. For those who can’t get away, we offer online courses, many at no charge.

What’s in store for 2020

Steamboat Perinatal Conference is the first live event of 2020, closely followed by NEO Conference (February 19-21, 2020) and Specialty Review (February 17-22, 2020). NEO Conference and Specialty Review are historically held in Orlando but will take place in San Diego for the first time this February.

During NEO, world-renowned speakers address many of the most critical and controversial issues that influence the clinical practice of newborn medicine. New in 2020, NEO will introduce Ask the Expert! The Ask the Expert roundtable discussion will focus on respiratory treatments in the NICU and early onset sepsis. The full NEO conference schedule spans three days, but a one-day pass is also available, adding to the conference’s appeal.

Specialty Review, which takes place concurrently with NEO, is popular among those preparing for initial subspecialty certification exams or those interested in a comprehensive refresher of the specialty. The six-day intensive review course consistently gets high marks; 99% of conference attendees say they would recommend it to a colleague.

NEO and Specialty Review will be held at the waterfront Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel in downtown San Diego. The central location offers easy access to the airport, attractions, shopping, dining and nightlife. The conference site change from Florida to California will provide easier access for west coast clinicians and it’s the ideal opportunity for east coasters to visit San Diego.

Next up is OB Challenges (April 23-25, 2020), held in Mesa, Arizona, which will celebrate its 37th anniversary in 2020 under the continued leadership of Phoenix Perinatal Associates, a MEDNAX affiliate. OB Challenges attracts obstetric providers from across the country for a multi-day event; however, single-session passes are also available, providing easy access to those within commuting distance. The 2020 theme, Expecting the Unexpected, will encompass a variety of topics to help obstetric providers prepare for the complicated and often unanticipated challenges of pregnancy and labor. OB Challenges will be held at the Sheraton Mesa Hotel, just 30 minutes from Phoenix.

Finally, our 2020 live conference line up concludes with Innovations in Neonatal Care (August 10-12, 2020) held in Austin, TX. With a longstanding history, Innovations just celebrated its 10th anniversary this past summer. Each year, the three-day conference focuses on a central theme related to the care of neonates; in 2020, the focus will be Dilemmas in Perinatal Care Delivery. The conference is designed to enhance attendees’ clinical awareness of cutting-edge information. Innovations also includes a roundtable discussion with national experts.

Making education accessible online

It’s a priority for MEDNAX to make continuing medical and nursing education accessible both inside and outside of the organization. Work schedules, personal commitments and budget constraints may make it difficult for clinicians to attend a conference. MEDNAX continues to add on-demand topics to our online learning platform to make it easy for clinicians to participate when and where it’s most convenient.

Live webinars give clinicians the best of both worlds – the ability to learn remotely while engaging in real time with a presenter through virtual Q&A sessions.

“We are excited to launch our new Neonatology Grand Round Series in February which will feature experts in the field discussing trending topics,” Timothy Biela, MD, course director for Neonatology Grand Rounds, NEO Conference and Innovations in Neonatal Care. Dr. Biela also serves as NICU medical director in our affiliated San Antonio, Texas, practice.

Registration is now open for the first three sessions in the Neonatology Grand Rounds Series.

The dates and times for all live webinars, as well as on-demand courses, are available through our online learning platform. Clinicians can search, filter and browse the complete array of MEDNAX CREQS opportunities to find the courses that best meet their needs and interests.

“Accessibility goes beyond the convenience factor,” says Curt Pickert, MD, President of MEDNAX’s Clinical Services Division. “Providing variety in terms of topic, location, time commitment and delivery method has an impact on workplace wellness. The health and wellbeing of our clinicians is a priority, and this is a small way we can help.”

The MEDNAX Center for Research, Education, Quality and Safety (CREQS) is accredited with commendation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Furthermore, the MEDNAX CREQS is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation - Nursing Continuing Professional Development (COA-NCPD).
